Black Light is a tribute to the work and memory of George Seferis, to the modern Greek poetic tradition, and to the Greek people, landscape and light. The first edition was published to coincide with the international conference on Seferis at the fifth international Cambridge Poetry Festival (1983), which Richard Burns founded in 1975. Since then, Black Light has become the best known of Richard Burns' books: reprinted three times in English, translated into four languages, and available with an added postscript in For the Living (Salt Publishing, Cambridge, 2004). The opening poem won the Duncan Lawrie Prize in the Arvon Poetry Competition.
