No. 1                                                               9th September, 2006

Midwives calling Push and Breathe and Push Now
who cradle mucus-stained bloodied heads of infants
falling bawling into this world are careful to guard
the delicate fontanelle for this is said to be a heavenly
gate surrounded by discernible rings of power and light

and because the first organ of a newborn child to emerge
into its birthplace is its glory this the skilled midwife
cradles between her gifted hands and releases just
before the following head and body are squeezed out
and she knots umbilicus and disposes of placenta.
